While you do a nice job giving Hamer his due, you make an error I believe on who 'patched' him up after he was shot in the back. Hamer himself had stated it was a black man who took him home and had his wife render aid and when able to they then had his brother help get him home to his family (mother). It is this action that many point to Hamer's respect for the rest of his life for black's. It is well know that if a lynching was planned or in progress and Hamer caught wind of it, not on his watch and it is said he wasn't nice about it. His investigation of the KKK was said by many to be almost personal. In the end I believe that Hamer was a hard nosed, honest, one way cop and likely ticked off a lot of people as one who 'never rolls over' has a habit of doing. But the colour of their skin didn't sway him. Yes the good folks in Texas could sure use more like Hamer, as could every police service.

The State of Texas hired F. Hamer to track down and kill B&C It is what it is. Bonnie and Clyde were deadly desperadoes and gunslingers. who were ambushed by six lawmen on a dirt road dying in a hail of gun fire. R.I.P. Bonnie and Clyde

Thank you for this tribute to one of the great lawmen, who has been much overlooked due to the era in which he lived, somewhere between the old west and modern times. My grandfather was a very young cowboy in 1898 when he went to work for Montague Stevens, (Squire Stevens), as grandad new him, on the Old WS ranch at Alma New Mexico. An old cowboy on that ranch going by the name of Bill Jackson, took Grandad under his wing and taught him all he knew about horses and cattle. Bill was an excellent cowboy and top hand with a six shooter and a very good man. He told Grandad he had left Texas just ahead of the Texas Rangers. He was actually Frank Jackson, who was the soul survivor of the shootout with Texas Rangers in Round Rock Texas in the late 1870's, that left Sam Bass dead. Some time in the mid to late 1930's, Jackson, in his old age sought out help to get a pardon from the State of Texas so he could die under his real name. The man who he made contact with to plead his case to the State of Texas was Frank Hamer. Jackson saw in Hamer a man who would understand his story. Hamer was in the process of doing that when Jackson died, so it was not followed through with. Grandad took my father as a young boy to meet the widow of the Legendary outlaw in Globe Arizona somewhere around 1940. There are very few who knew who Jackson was and even fewer still alive who know it. Jackson's secret was one closely guarded by Grandad and his family. There was nothing Jackson would not do for Grandad and Grandad always honored him and his memory by keeping what he knew close to his vest. Grandad died in 1951 and I suppose I am very lucky to even know who Bill Jackson really was or to know of his dealing with Frank Hamer.

Your narrative regarding the plan of san diego is bull shit any german relationship would not have surfaced until 1917 with the zimmerman telegram. the supposed “plan” didn’t exist. The raiding was orchestrated by a presidential proxy war in mexico. Carranzo wanted recognition by woodrow wilson so he supported raids into south texas then offered to aid in the capture of the bandidos if us recognized him as mexicos president. the fictitious “plan” was then used by texas political factions to expel the mexican-american rancher, land owners, and residents from the state by terror which included killings through gunfire, lyinchings, and mob violence with the support and participation of texas rangers and u.s. calvary. no doubt your hero was a murderer of americans of mexican ancestery . this period is possibly the darkest example of texas rangers history congrats on white washing it with your narrative. Both my mother and fathers family fled their land in south texas after family members had been killed by rangers and vigilantes moving to the relative safety of san antonio and on my fathers side a few moving to monterrey - where they owned a lumbering company. Do some research before you swallo the vick on this heroic story of rangers fighting rebellious mexicans bent on killing white men and boys!

I have to admit that I'm here due to following the Bonnie and Clyde story. It wasn't that I idolized them, I was just interested in the times they lived in, and why they chose the life of crime. Frank Hammer was much tougher than Clyde ever thought about being. Clyde would never had stood a chance one on one against Frank. The '60's movie about B & C really tried to make Frank look bad. I'm glad his wife sued them, and received a settlement. In the end, Frank Hammer prevailed. What a tough ass lawman.

Just saw this and like the documentary on Mr. Hamer and the capture of Bonnie and Clyde, however your research on the porvenir massacre is not accurate and it has been proven that innocent men were killed. It might be why Hamer never wanted to talk about it as stated by his friend whose apparent glorified inaccurate story is being taken as truth.
